Since “Shinar” is the old name for the land where Babylon was located, it is significant that it is used. Prophets do employ it for Babylon, Isa. 11:11; Dan. 1:2; but it usually seems to have a connotation of what Shinar stood for when it first appears in the Scriptures, When it is first used (Gen. 10:10; 11:2) it reminds us of the ungodly attempts of Nimrod to found earthly kingdoms and of the heaven-storming projects of the men who built the tower of Babel.
